Doris Metropolitan – Not your typical Nola Fare

Chateaubriand Tartare (steak tartare) from Doris Metropolitan steakhouse in New Orleans Louisiana

We have made multiple trips to Doris Metropolitan now but I will focus on the foods that we ordered on our most recent trip to write about. For our starters we went with The Chateaubriand Tartare, The Jumbo U-4 Grilled Prawns, Tuna Tartare, and the Premium Caviar service. Prior to this trip we had enjoyed the Chateaubriand Tartare on our last visit, but the others were all new items for us.

The Chateaubriand Tartare is simply excellent. I personally have only had one other tartare in my life that I would consider to be better which was Bern’s Steakhouse in Tampa, Florida (Our review of Bern’s Steakhouse). The filet is super tender and the additions of shallot, capers, quail yolk, and Dijon mustard all create a wonderful bed of flavor for this high quality meat to rest on upon your tongue. The Tuna Tartare is also a very pleasant appetizer and anywhere else in the country would probably be a top appetizer on their menu. This Chateaubriand Tartare is simply too good.

This Caviar is simply incredible and a true treat. A say a true treat because I’m imagining you have to have an extremely rich palate to pay the cost of this one (the ballpark of $200) more than once or twice in your life. It was thoroughly enjoyed and I am so glad I have that experience to talk about, but this will more than likely be an item I shelf in favor of another less expensive item such as their Carpaccio or Beetroot salad. I did really like mixing the caviar with the egg yolk, chive, and caper. All of them together for a single bite on a nicely baked piece of crostini was a special moment.

The U-4 Jumbo Prawns were on the specials list so I am not sure how often they are available, but these were fantastic. You can see for scale here the size of them compared to Chas’ face, these were no joke. They had a wonderful citrus flavor to them and a nice char from the open flame grill that created more depth of flavor. I do believe that they could have served these with a bit of a sauce, even if it was more of the citrus marinade, to dip these in, but they were very enjoyable either way. Solely due to the size of these they ate more like lobster than shrimp which was a fun trick on your mind.

Amazing filet mignon (bone in) at Doris Metropolitan steakhouse in New Orleans Louisiana

For our entrée we ordered the dry aged bone in filet for three. This is legitimately possibly the best steak I’ve ever eaten. I have enjoyed meals at places like the aforementioned Bern’s Steakhouse in Tampa, Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse, and at Peter Luger’s in Brooklyn and this is without a doubt at the bare minimum in the conversation for number one I have ever had. The dry aging room is directly to your left when you enter the building and you can see the care and attention that goes into preparing these meats. The cook was absolutely perfect for my liking, it may even be considered slightly under for some people which is great since it’s usually two temps past where you wanted it. It is served with a fantastic bone marrow that is served inside the bone as well. I have dreams of this steak. I have vivid, beautiful, comprehensive memories of this steak. If you can make this steak yours, you must.

We closed out with a dessert we have had from a previous trip as well – The Chocolate Nemesis! So again, not to bring up the same location again but the desserts from Bern’s Steakhouse are widely renowned. They have their own dessert room that is completely separate from your dinner and you have a different server and everything, that’s how serious dessert is at Bern’s. With that said, this dessert could be on Bern’s menu for sure. This is a rich and decadent Chocolate Torte that is accompanied by a disc of pistachio ice cream, Amarena cherries (which are incredible if you’ve never had them), some chocolate sauce of some sort, and crushed pistachios. I am not big on sweets, and I would eat this weekly if I could.

Slide over Creole, you’ve got some competition in the Quarter

This was not the best steak experience I’ve had. At Bern’s steakhouse the story, the service, the dessert room and the largest private wine cellar in the country make for a very hard to top experience. This is not my favorite steakhouse experience. The only time I’ve been able to enjoy a meal at Luger’s in my life was with my father, and we were more likely to share a hot dog or a burger than an expensive steak dinner, so that will be with me forever. This truly may be though, the best steak I’ve eaten, and I’ve had it twice now so this wasn’t a flash in the pan scenerio. This goes without saying but I just love to say it anyway…Doris Metropolitan steakhouse in New Orleans, Louisiana – Didn’t Suck!
